Ashok (İrfan Khan) and his wife Ashima (Tabu) move from Kolkata to New York in the 1970s with dreams of starting a new life. The process of transitioning from their lives surrounded by traditions in Kolkata to becoming Americans is a very painful one. Their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is born here. As an Indian named after a famous Russian writer, Gogol faces challenges that are very different from what his parents experienced, especially when he starts dating a blonde girl.
