Newly released from prison, the famous thief, German-born crime mastermind Doc Erwin Riedenschneider (Sam Jaffe) wastes no time in starting preparations for a new heist upon arriving in Cincinnati. While inside, he had devised a flawless plan to rob a jewelry company, but he needs to assemble a team and find a source of funding. He turns to the cunning lawyer Alonzo D. Emmerich (Louis Calhern) for financial support. The other members of the team include the Irish-born broke tough guy Dix (Sterling Hayden) dreaming of buying a horse farm, the hunchbacked cafe owner Gus (James Whitmore) who will be the driver in the heist, and the safe-cracking expert Louis (Anthony Caruso). There is also Cobby (Marc Lawrence), a mediator and horse racing bookie who runs a gambling den among these individuals…
