This unique gangster saga spans a seventy-year period and tells the story of three generations of rival families seeking to dominate the mining town of Wasseypur in India, driven by a thirst for power and a blood feud. The first half begins in the final years of colonial India: Shahid Khan, who plunders British trains, later works in the coal mines of Ramadhir Singh only for revenge. After ten years, his son Sardar Khan swears to restore his father’s honor and becomes the most feared man in Wasseypur, a town obsessed with Bollywood cinema. Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 was first shown at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2012.
